Chelsea sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United during the summer, with former Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayako signed as his replacement in a £40m deal.
Bakayoko and Matic has often been compared this season after Matic’s bright start to life in the United jersey.
However, Bakayoko outplayed the Serbian in Chelsea’s victory over United on Sunday, and Blues legend Graeme Le Saux reckons Antonio Conte can transform Tiemoue Bakayoko into a better player than Manchester United midfielder Matic.
He believes Bakayako is a more dynamic midfielder and his impact will be better felt when he plays upfront.
Asked whether the victory justifies Chelsea’s decision to sell Matic, Betfair ambassador Le Saux said: “I really think it depends on what system Antonio Conte chooses to play.
“Bakayoko is definitely more versatile [than Matic], he can play further forward and if he can add more goals to his game then he’ll be hugely valuable.
“Equally, there will be games this season when they’ll need to play with more structure defensively but remember they do have [Danny] Drinkwater now to line up alongside [N’Golo] Kante.”
