Chelsea’s academy keeps breeding quality youngsters and for the past six years, the amount of talent coming out of the academy has been extraordinary.
More recently, Andreas Christensen has matured and is beginning to stake a claim in the Chelsea academy, just as Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham, who were handed call-ups to the England national team for the first time.
The future is looking bright for Chelsea, but the Blues must learn how to nurture these youngsters and provide a pathway from the academy to the senior team.
Also, noticing the quality in a youngster and having belief in him is another area Chelsea will have to improve on. We have seen so many quality players leave the club to have outstanding careers elsewhere, and Arsenal legend Martin Keown has bemoaned the sales of Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah, who are now key players at Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.
He said: “These players are all so talented that it clearly was the wrong decision for Chelsea to let them go. But when these decisions were made, these players were not better than those in Chelsea’s first team.
“It is always difficult to keep one eye on the future and Chelsea had already sent Salah and Lukaku out on loan. For me, Salah has been the signing of the season. He and Sadio Mane are a match made in heaven for Liverpool.
“He makes these tremendous runs — and nine times out of 10 will put the ball in the back of the net at the end of them.”
