Certainly, the possibility of being paired against a European super club was on the cards with Barcelona and PSG, the two likeliest teams we could meet aside Besiktas. As predicted, Chelsea are to face Barcelona in the Champions league Round of 16 clashes.
Here are three reasons why Barcelona is a decent draw for Chelsea:
CHELSEA ARE BARCA & MESSI BOGEY TEAM:
The history between Chelsea and Barcelona is more than a pager. From scandalous penalty decisions to referee tapping up, both clubs are famed for questioning headliners. The two clubs have been drawn together six times in the Champions League era and five in the knockout stages, with Barcelona advancing three times and Chelsea triumphing twice. The Blues, though, revel in their status as being a bogey team for the Catalan giants. More painfully for the Spanish side is that their talismanic playmaker, Lionel Messi, remarkably, has never scored against Chelsea in his career, famously crashing a penalty off the crossbar in April 2012 when we beat them enroute to winning our first Champions league trophy. They’ve never had it easy against us and this tie promises to be spectacular.
BARCELONA ARE NOT QUITE THE FIRING FORCE OF YESTERYEARS:
They may be unbeaten at this point in all competitions, but the truth is that they are beatable. Barcelona of present are no match to Pep Guardiola side of 2008-12. The former were absolutely brilliant on all fronts and could blow any team away. We got a result against that side and, so there should be optimism that we can also beat this present side.
WE’VE GOT THE FIREPOWER:
With the likes of Eden Hazard, Alvaro Morata, N’Golo Kante and others, Chelsea have a great team capable of playing against the best in Europe, with Barcelona not an exception. Playing our game and doing our best could just be the spark needed to make it to the finals in Kiev.
Let’s hope for the best!
