Andreas Christensen had two successful seasons on loan with Borussia Monchengladbach, before he came back to Stamford Bridge and is now an important part of Antonio Conte’s setup.
Chelsea technical loan coach Eddie Newton has revealed that the 21-year-old holds the record for receiving the highest performance rating of any Chelsea player during his loan spell.
Newton recalls Christensen’s display in Monchengladbach’s 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in last season’s Champions League group stage and admitted it was a stellar moment for the defender.
“He’s done exactly what he needed to do on loan,” Newton told Chelsea TV.
“He had played at the highest levels in the Bundesliga and the Champions League consistently over two season. Got player of the season in the first season.
“He went up against Barcelona, I was so proud when I walked away from the stadium.
“Even though they [Monchengladbach] lost, he was outstanding. Outstanding. Because he reads the game so well.
“He played with a maturity way beyond his years, a composure way beyond his years.
“[He received] the highest mark I’ve ever given in the loan process. He was Chelsea level, simple as that.
“I think the fans have seen he’s stepped in against Tottenham and Manchester United, it’s like he’s been there all his life.
“He’s an incredible footballer, one this club should be very proud of and hold on to very tightly because he’s a player we can definitely have here for the next 10 years and be another John Terry, have that same kind of stature, because he has got that ability.”
