The decisive clash ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Both teams had chances to win the game, but in the end it ended in a draw.
Here are 3 talking points from the game.
CHELSEA MISS OUT ON TOP SPOT:
The potentiality of being handed a difficult draw was enough incentive for Chelsea to win the game against Atletico Madrid. A continuous theme in the game was Chelsea’s lack of killer instinct as we were left to rue several missed chances to win the game. A fair game it was and one we don’t later reflect on and regret failing to win.
CHELSEA’S NEXT ROUND OPPONENTS LIMITED:
The stark reality facing Chelsea after failing to win their group is the limited options of our potential opponents in the Champions league next phase. With Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham and maybe Liverpool likely to top their groups, we are left with PSG, Besiktas and Barcelona as likely opponents in the pool. The going might get tougher and Conte and Chelsea must be ready to get going.
CHELSEA MUST IMPROVE FOR NEXT PHASE:
Performances such as in our doubleheader against Roma proved costly to our group win failure. The more we advance, the tougher teams we are likely to meet. It will be expedient for Chelsea to smoothen the rough edges to our games, work to modify our weaknesses and magnify our strengths as we seek to win the trophy with the big ears for the second time in our history.
Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
