Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has branded reports suggesting that he could return to the Premier League by joining Everton as false.

Mikel spent 11 years at Chelsea before departing for China to link up with Tianjin Teda in January.

“I don’t know from where such a rumour could come, but this story is untrue,” Mikel told Tianjin TV.

“I want to stay in the CSL and play for [Tianjin] Teda. I’m sure there will be lots of speculation about me as the transfer window nears but it is a false rumour.

“The CSL lags behind the Premier League, but their level is still quite high. I believe more matches will help me get in shape for the 2018 World Cup.

“I just hope to stay injury free next year and have an amazing season with Teda.”
