Chelsea beat Norwich City to progress to the FA Cup fourth round after a difficult game against Norwich.

The Blues will meet Newcastle at home in the fourth round of the competition after beating the Canaries in a tense penalty shootout.

A lot of strange refereeing decisions were made with some really controversial moments with VAR not being used when maybe it should have.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had a lot to say about the new system.

The Chelsea boss believes in the future of the VAR, but believes more work should be done as he said: “I think the best situation would be the referee to watch. I think that this is the best situation to watch and then in this usually you have the chance to reduce a lot. As I said before, when you introduce a new system you need a bit of time before to take the best way to use this system.

“I think in my opinion I follow the Italian games, I follow this system and they are using it very well. They cut the mistakes a lot.”

On the Willian situation where he was at first shown a yellow card for what should have been a Chelsea penalty, Conte can’t understand why it wasn’t given despite the presence of the VAR. The Chelsea boss said: “Once. I think it was very clear. It was a big mistake but I don’t want to know why, but at least to avoid a big mistake you have to call the referee and say ‘look, maybe it might be better if you go to watch’.

“Otherwise in this way we cut the power to the referee on the pitch. He has to make the final decision. Not another person.”

Conte added: “You must be sure 100%. Despite this there is another person checking the situation. We have to find the right solution.”

On the referee’s performance in relation to the VAR, Conte said: “I think that we need to improve if we want to use the new system. Today in this game there is a situation very clear, with Willian, at the start of extra-time. I think the situation was very clear and I watched and this is a penalty. Very clear.

“Not that I am unhappy with the referee, because the referee took the decision quickly to book him. That means you don’t have doubt, if you do this quickly. If we want to improve, you have to wait to check with the person that is watching the game. Then if this person is sure 100% then you book him.

“The person that is watching the game, at least you must have a doubt because there is a kick to Willian. You have to call the referee that there is a doubt. It is better if you go to watch the decision. This is not right. In Italy, before to arrive this new system they tried and tried. If you want to try quickly this new system then you have to find the right solution. The final decision is for the referee on the pitch, not the one watching the game.

“This is because we want to use a new system and it is my opinion to try to use the new system. You can reduce a lot of mistakes.”
