Back then in 2003/04 when Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea Football Club, the assumption was that a new football super rich club has emerged to upset the tall order set by Arsenal and Manchester United. Chelsea won back to back Premier league titles and emerged as a force powered by big transfer spending that showed we were ready to belong to Europe elite clubs.

Roman’s big spending brought more silverware celebrations as Chelsea have won everything since he bought the club. Times have changed recently with the emergence of other super rich clubs. The likes of PSG, Manchester City have joined the ring to fight to be the best club in the world. The influence of constant superpower clubs: Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and the Chinese force have made things much difficult for Chelsea. Can Chelsea topple them?

The club’s desire for self-sufficiency to avoid over-reliance on the wealth of Abramovich is sensible. Gone are the days when Chelsea over-paid or spent silly money in buying players. Chelsea’s economic policy has been a source of frustration for Antonio Conte as he wants addition to the team. Chelsea’s policy of buying young players with good resale value is fantastic, but that means the best players will never be at the club. Wouldn’t that leave us behind in an era in which clubs pay over the odds to buy the best players?

Isn’t it high time Chelsea loosened the purse strings to buy the best players in the world to help us bridge the gap between Chelsea and other European giants. Time will tell if we still belong among the best with performances in Europe’s biggest competition with Barcelona to play against. It will surely be a do or die affair for Chelsea.

Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
