Alexis Sanchez is set to complete a move to Manchester United this January transfer window, as United hijacked the deal from rivals, Manchester City.

Chelsea were linked with the Chilean at the end of last season, and the Blues were briefly linked with the 29-year-old in this transfer window.

Sanchez is expected to become the Premier League’s most paid player, and former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes handing a player that sort of money at Chelsea would have caused Chelsea some financial problems with the likes of Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Willian in the team as well.

“They needed Sanchez,” he said.

“If they would have got Sanchez I think they get in the top four.

“But if you go and get Sanchez, you bet your bottom dollar come what two days later, Hazard’s agent’s knocking on the door, Willian’s is knocking on the door, (Cesc) Fabregas, (N’Golo) Kante.

“They’re all knocking on the door and before you know it, that £100m signing for his package turns into £200m.”
