Christian Purslow, former Chelsea Head of Global Commercial activities, believes Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is having issues with the Chelsea board because he underestimated how financially responsible Chelsea have been run as a club.
“The issue probably going on behind the scenes is that I suspect Conte came to Chelsea expecting and wanting to conquer the world,” Purslow told Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“He sees himself as one of the finest managers in the world.
“He went thinking ‘Me and Roman Abramovich equals guaranteed success’.
“What he didn’t realise is that Chelsea for at least the past three years, has been run in a financially responsible way and he was hired as part of that change of approach. The club has had to grow the revenues and make the club self-sufficient.
“Roman for the 10 years before I arrived wrote huge cheques every year to balance the books.
“I don’t think Antonio has quite woken up to how financially responsible the club has been run.”
