According to latest reports, Chelsea are closer to signing Arsenal striker Oliver Giroud than they are to signing Roma striker Edin Dzeko but is Giroud really an upgrade to what Batshuayi offers Chelsea?
I understand Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants a big target man as a reference point for his Chelsea team, which is why Chelsea have been interested in a lot of tall players lately, but I am of the belief that a striker should score goals.
Didier Drogba is one of the best target man that has graced the game and Chelsea legend was also a goalscorer. If Conte wants a target man at Chelsea, a club of Chelsea’s stature should be looking at a player whose qualities are close to the legendary Drogba.
Michy Batshuayi might not be a classic target man but the Belgian striker knows how to find the back of the net. Since joining Chelsea in 2016, Batshuayi has the best goals-to-minutes return of any player in games at Stamford Bridge.
Batshuayi scores a goal at Stamford Bridge every 69 minutes compared to Diego Costa, who scored at home every 144 minutes over the same period; Alvaro Morata’s current rate is 190 minutes between goals.
Despite not really having a run in the team, Batshuayi has scored 19 goals in 53 appearances for Chelsea and this return is better than that of Oliver Giroud of Arsenal, who is reportedly close to joining Chelsea.
Truth be told, Batshuayi is better than most players Chelsea have been chasing. Oliver Giroud has scored 18 goals in his last 53 appearances for Arsenal, Andy Carroll has 15 goals in his last 53 appearances while Peter Crouch has 14 in his last 53 appearances.
If Conte wants another striker at Chelsea, we should be going for a striker better than what Batshuayi offers Chelsea. Edin Dzeko should be the striker Chelsea should be going for and not Oliver Giroud if we are truly interested in improving the team.
Giroud isn’t an upgrade on Batshuayi.
