Olivier Giroud joined Chelsea for £18million on transfer deadline day from Arsenal, while the Gunners paid a club record £55m to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Emirates from Borussia Dortmund.
The move saw Michy Batshuayi join Dortmund on loan to pave the way for Giroud’s arrival, and Arsenal legend Martin keown thinks Chelsea have signed a good player in Giroud.
“Arsenal have strengthened their rivals but maybe the attitude at the club is that they have to help themselves by bringing in Aubameyang and not worry about anyone else,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“This move will be a good fit for Giroud. He did not want to go to Merseyside and this switch is right on his doorstep. He can quickly become a darling of the fans at Stamford Bridge.
“I was at Chelsea’s FA Cup win over Newcastle last weekend. While Michy Batshuayi scored two goals, I did not sense enough hunger in his play.
“Despite this, the Chelsea fans were excellent with him. They were really encouraging, applauding his good touches.
“Giroud will find that Chelsea fans will give him a chance.
“You would expect a fit Alvaro Morata to start ahead of Giroud but he will get his opportunities.
“We know he has a brilliant attitude from the bench.”
