By the time the referee blew the final whistle in the game between Chelsea and Barcelona, it felt as though Chelsea lost three points at Stamford Bridge, with Lionel Messi’s goal giving Chelsea a bitter taste in the mouth.

The Blues were the more threatening side on the night and Barcelona could only get a goal when Andreas Christensen made a mistake which Barca capitalised on as Lionel Messi scored with 15 minutes left of the game.

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas thinks the Blues could have won the game, and admitted Willian could easily have had a hatrick, with two of his shots hitting the post.

Fabregas said after the game: “It is such a shame really. I thought we were very good, we executed the game plan really well, we were compact, solid, played as a team and created lots of chances – Willian could have had a hat-trick – but we go home sad because a fantastic performance is not a fantastic result.

“It is still open though and we have showed that we can compete and we will need another excellent performance at the Nou Camp to go through.”
