It finished at Old Trafford 2-1 in favour of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. For Conte, it’s another defeat that brings pressure and uncertainty regarding his Chelsea future.
Here are 3 quick thoughts on the game:
CHELSEA FAIL TO CAPITALISE ON EARLY LEAD
The opening moments of the game saw Conte’s blues come out of the blocks with real attacking intent to win the game. Chelsea’s positive display was rewarded with an early fine goal almost midway through the first half by in-form winger, Willian Borges. But Chelsea’s meek defensive resistance like against Barcelona let United into the game and also take the lead as goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard sealed the win for the Red devils.
CHELSEA’S LIMP SECOND HALF PERFORMANCE
One question that will likely be on Conte’s mind is: ‘how did it all get wrong? First, allowing United a chance into the game was bizarre. Their first real attacking thrust into the Chelsea penalty exposes our defensive frailties which allowed Martial and Lukaku too many touches on the ball for the latter to score the equalizer. A lack of fighting spirit, motivation and focus led to the second goal and overall collapse in the second period. Morata’s ruled out goal aside, Chelsea failed to match their first half efforts.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION SCARE
It’s quite hard to imagine that we were second heading into the new year only to now find ourselves fifth in the league standing as a result of poor performances and results. Perhaps our defeats to beatable opponents Bournemouth, West Ham, Watford and Crystal Palace might come to hunt us at the end of the season if we fail to qualify for the Champion league. However, there’s still all to fight for as we remain in the mix for qualification. But with big games against Manchester City(a), Liverpool(h) and Spurs(h), then we need to find our winning form. Also important will be winning games against the lesser sides with bogey team Crystal Palace(h), West Ham(h), Southampton(a), Newcastle(a), Swansea(a), and Huddersfield(a) to play. It’s now all or nothing for Chelsea henceforth
Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
