Paul Merson has warned Alvaro Morata that Chelsea new striker Olivier Giroud has the ability to keep him out of the team.
Giroud, who scored over 100 goals for Arsenal during his five year spell at the club, joined Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
Merson also believes signing Giroud for £18 million represents a good deal for Chelsea.
“To get Giroud for that price, it’s a cup of tea, that is,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He could keep Alvaro Morata out of the team, he really could.”
Merson also revealed Chelsea boss Antonio Conte should be happy with Chelsea’s January transfer business.
“I’m a big fan of Barkley as well, even though I know he splits opinion,” Merson added.
“Emerson is decent as well and getting Batshuayi and Kenedy out is good business.
“Antonio Conte should be happy with what they’ve done.”
