If there was any outstanding player in the Chelsea team in our 1-1 Champions League clash versus Barcelona, it had to be Willian.

Rudiger was a shining star, but Willian showed yet again why he at least deserves a starting spot at Chelsea, unfortunately he has had to fight for his shirt since last season and still misses out in starting games after playing well in the previous game.

It’s always difficult to get enough chances at a club like Chelsea where there’s high competition for places as a result of the type of players there are. But Willian had never failed to impress when he does get his chances.

On Tuesday, he was on fire against Barcelona. He rattled the post twice, and got a goal in the fixture, but it didn’t stop there. He literally ran the show in our counter-attack set up, and showed the kind of hunger required to go up against a side like Barcelona.

Tuesday wouldn’t be the first outstanding display we’d seem from Willian. On Friday, against Hull, he showed similar magic and got a brace. And to think that the man isn’t even a regular starter makes his showings all the more spectacular.

There have been talks of a transfer to another club, but I cannot see that happening, at least, not for a regular fee. The man has continued to increase his worth at the Bridge with his admirable consistency, and if anything, it is about time he got an extension and an outrageous release clause stamped on him.

Willian is a very good player, and I’m very glad he hasn’t left despite the pressure and occasional unhappiness. With players like Willian, our attack will continue to be a fright to every opposition we come against.

The man deserves some reward for his dedication and loyalty to Chelsea, and I think a start against United this Sunday would be the perfect way to return the favour.

What makes him perfect for this blog? He lives for Chelsea FC, in fact, I heard he sat in the middle of a road, and refused to go home after that bitter loss to Barcelona in 2009. Haha.
