Chelsea’s Champions league dream is over after a 4-1 aggregate knock out win by Barca over two legs.
Here are 3 talking points from the game:
COURTOIS LET CHELSEA DOWN:
Crucial moments define clubs and players. The game against Barcelona was largely decided by Thibaut Courtois’ two clumsy goalkeeping errors which gifted Lionel Messi and Barca two goals. The Chelsea goalie was unconvincing throughout the game and let the team down. His performances this season are a reflection of Chelsea’s inconsistent season so far.
CHELSEA LACKED LEADERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE:
The bitter pill of Chelsea’s agonizing defeat to Barca was that Spanish side weren’t really at their best. But the difference in both teams was in application of tactical plan by the players. Barca took their chances and Chelsea didn’t. The game passed Chelsea by because the players couldn’t motivate themselves better. Six years ago, Chelsea were also two goals down, but the leadership and experience of Lampard and Co ensured passage to the finals.
WHAT NEXT FOR CONTE AND CHELSEA:
It’s gradually looking gloomy for the fiery Conte and Chelsea this season. Fifth in the league, out of the Champions league, ousted from the League Cup and now with only the FA Cup left to play for. Will winning the FA Cup be enough to save the Italian from the sack? Will hiring a new coach solve Chelsea’s problem? Are the players not below the level of other top teams? Crucial decisions will need to be taken by the club. It’s now make or break for Chelsea and Conte.
Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
