Chelsea are currently five points off top four places, and the fight for top four this season is an intense one.
Blues legend Graeme Le Saux believes it’ll be difficult for Antonio Conte’s men to break into a Champions League spot with just eight games left to go.
Le Saux however believes that winning the FA Cup will sort of cushion the effect of missing out on Europe next season.
Le Saux told Betfair: “I don’t think Conte’s future at Chelsea is entirely based on what the team will or won’t win this season.
“There are a lot of other issues that have been well documented.
“However, winning the FA Cup would clearly be a good way to end the season for Chelsea who have obviously underperformed this season.
“And it would at least give them a positive ending and which would do no harm to Conte.
“I honestly believe this season has been one of the toughest in recent years for the big clubs – [Manchester] City aside of course.
“And whoever finishes fourth will breathe a big sigh of relief and at the moment it doesn’t look like that will be Chelsea.
“Even if they don’t qualify for Champions League but do win the FA Cup the club will probably take comfort from that, which would be good for Conte of course.
“However it has not been a good season compared to the last and that will be taken into account.”
