Chelsea’s football in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium has been criticised in every quarter, and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville who was a co-commentator in that game was highly critical of Chelsea’s display.
The Manchester United legend described Chelsea’s display as an ’embarrassment’ and Antonio Conte hit back by defending his defensive tactics against the runaway Premier League leaders.
“I’m not so stupid to play open against Manchester City and lose 3-0 or 4-0,” the Chelsea boss said.
“If I remember well, three days ago, Arsenal played twice against City and then you criticised Arsene Wenger because they conceded three goals in only 30 minutes.
“The pundit has to use the head to understand when you speak about tactics, because I think you must have knowledge to speak about tactics and not only to speak in a stupid way.”
Neville responded to Conte’s comments as he spoke ahead of Manchester United’s Monday night game against Crystal Palace.
“I had to go quiet for two or three minutes on co-commentary because I had to reflect on what I was seeing,” he said on Monday Night Football.
“I suppose it disgusts me. I can’t relate to it in any shape or form. These Chelsea players yesterday took a day off, took a rest.
“Antonio called us stupid, maybe he did, I don’t know the exact quotes, but he’ll have been equally as disgusted.
“They chucked it in yesterday those players.”
