Martin Keown believes Chelsea boss Antonio Conte should have used N’Golo Kante to man-mark Lionel Messi in Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat to Barcelona.
Messi was impressive against Chelsea as the Argentinian scored twice for Barcelona.
“I wonder if someone should try to man-mark Messi, a player with really quick movement who can dart across the pitch,” Keown told Daily Mail.
“N’Golo Kante could have done that job for Chelsea last night. He did it to a certain extent in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.
“Kante has a low centre of gravity, can cover plenty of ground and gets a foot in when others cannot.
“Man-marking was a role I was often given during my career. While I used to enjoy stopping a team-mate from controlling a session in training, I did feel that in matches the role to some extent prevented me from playing my own game.
“Nobody really likes to do it and you have to be incredibly disciplined.
“I remember having to man mark Auxerre’s Corentin Martins during a Cup Winners’ Cup tie in 1995.
“It was the biggest run-around I had ever been given in my life. I covered every blade of grass but ultimately he did not cause us any problems and we won 1-0.
“It would have been interesting to see how Messi coped with Kante man-marking him.”
