Finally, Chelsea lost 3-1 at home to Spurs in a Champions league qualification deciding game. A result that all but diminishes our faint hopes of qualifying for Europe’s elite competition.
Here are 3 talking points from the game:
SPURS EXORCISE CHELSEA DEMONS:
Prior to the game, one major headline was on Spurs 27 year wait for a victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have been their pain over the couple of years and getting one over their crosstown rivals was Mauricio Pochettino’s challenge in this crucial game. For Conte and Chelsea, it was all about salvaging a season that has been far from vintage. At the end, little details played a role in deciding the winner in this game. Deservedly, Spurs read the details beautifully and made Chelsea pay for their errors. A long range Christian Eriksen piledriver and a cozy brace from Chelsea tormentor-in-chief, Dele Alli sealed all three points for Spurs, and helped them to claim their first win over Chelsea since 1990.
CHELSEA FAIL TO TAKE THEIR CHANCES:
The game started rather slowly with both teams looking to contain and dominate each other. Spurs were better in possession, while Chelsea had the better chances. The major issue with Chelsea was not being able to convert their chances into goals. With Spurs having opted to keep Harry Kane on the bench, it was the perfect opportunity for Chelsea to capitalize and put the game out of Spurs reach, and we didn’t. Spurs stole the initiative and scored two heartbreaking goals that will surely hurt everyone connected to the club.
FA CUP; THE ONLY RESPITE FOR CHELSEA:
With Champions League qualification looking obviously impossible, the FA Cup offers another redemption competition to save our season from being a failure. With a favorable but potential tricky draw against Southampton just the hindrance to the final, Chelsea can gain hope of winning the relegation strugglers and then battle hard to win whoever makes it to the final between Spurs and Manchester United. The ball is still in our court and we must play right to end in glory.
Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
