Chelsea defeated Southampton 2-0 in the FA Cup semifinal clash at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday to set up an FA Cup final showdown with Manchester United on May 19.

Olivier Giroud had a good game against the Saints and opened the scoring before Alvaro Morata came on to put the scores beyond contest.

BT Sport pundit and former England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has hailed Antonio Conte’s decision to start Giroud ahead of Morata for the Southampton clash.

The Frenchman came off the bench to score twice against Southampton in the league last weekend and Gerrard says he deserved a start at Wembley.

“I think there’s a lack of confidence,” Gerrard said of Morata.

“But I don’t think he can have any complaints.

“If he was in form and scoring and he got dropped then yeah you’d feel sorry for him.

“If he comes on today he has to prove the manager wrong that he should have started from the beginning.

“That’s what Giroud did against Southampton and he deserves to play.”
