In such an underwhelming season as this one, it is always difficult to pick a player of the season candidate. If you take your mind back to 2015/16, you’d recall it was also hard to make a pick considering there wasn’t quite an outstanding player — we finished 10th, and Willian was the standout player!

This season has been a whirlwind of different results and mixed feelings for fans and players alike. Coming down from winning the league title to struggling for a top four finish. It’s hard to come to terms with, but then again, such is the type of league we ply our trade in. Only the fittest survive. Therefore, one must always be at the very best. City won it this season because of that, next season, it could be us all over again.

Away from that, and back to the question of ‘who should be crowned the ultimate player for Chelsea this season?’ Who truly deserves it?

We have not had any outstanding performers like last season, where Cesar Azpilicueta, Eden Hazard and N’Golo kanté vied for it, and the whole team was outstanding – the wing-backs, Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic.

Alvaro Morata is out of it because he’s been very underwhelming after a good start to his Chelsea career. Azpilicueta has been great, but this hasn’t been his best season at the club.

Eden Hazard has been great for most parts of the season, and experienced a dip in form lately before he picked it up again. Sixteen goals from the Belgian for us this term is not a bad return, and his creation ratio has not changed either. He has maintained his six chances creation ratio per game despite the team not particularly being good. I think he is the best player we have had in a long while. If we were playing well, one can only imagine what the motivation would do to his numbers.

Kanté, on the other hand has been rock- solid yet again. He is the only potent force we have in midfield, and that’s quite a shame considering we have other high-profile players in that position. However, Kanté has stood out yet again.

Hazard and Kante have been wonderful for us, but if I could choose, I’d say Hazard because of the goals and overall impact on the team. But then, we can’t neglect Kante’s impact.

Andreas Christensen is another lad worth a mention. I mean, no one expected he’d slot in so seamlessly. But he has, and has been quite impressive while at it. A few blunders here and there, but give the man more confident people to play alongside, and the story could only get better.

So Hazard is my pick for player of the season at Chelsea. Who do you consider more deserving, or do you agree with my choice?

What makes him perfect for this blog? He lives for Chelsea FC, in fact, I heard he sat in the middle of a road, and refused to go home after that bitter loss to Barcelona in 2009. Haha.
