Marcos Alonso was unlucky not to have gotten a red card in the 3-2 win over Southampton as he stamped on Shane Long in the first half.

The Chelsea wing-back lunged in hard on Long, but the referee Mike Dean didn’t react to the incident.

There have been clamours for Alonso to be given a three match ban, but the Chelsea wing-back could escape punishment because of Dean’s initial decision during the game.

Dean was placed only yards away from the incident and had an unobstructed view of the situation. And because Dean did not consider Alonso’s actions to be a foul, the FA do not ‘re-referee’ situations which officials have clearly seen and judged during the game.

However , Alonso could face retrospective action if Dean claims he did not fully see the incident in his match report which will be sent to the FA.

The FA could then charge Alonso with violent conduct, which would result in a three-game ban.
