The gossip mills are fabricating stories, the media houses are making rounds and the pundits are speculating about Chelsea’s new manager despite Antonio Conte still in charge at the club. Without a doubt, the club needs a new direction especially after an underwhelming season which saw us finish fifth and miss out on Champions League football. More so, the fact we have failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition twice in the last three years is enough to suggest we need clear forward thinking.
Conte’s failure to match or better our title-winning season will ultimately cost him his job. Chelsea will have to come up with £9m to pay him off. The next man for the job is Maurizio Sarri. The Italian is a tantalising prospect considering his exciting brand of football which will change the club from the days of pragmatism to artistry. The former Napoli Coach was relieved of his duties, but has a £8m release clause in his contract which expires by May 31. Quite a tricky situation.
The club’s unwillingness to pay up is a sticking point, and the bitter side of it is that if the clause expires, Napoli are entitled to name any price they want for the manager, and the Italian club’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is a hardball negotiator. Tying up the deal for Sarri will be important to avoid more complications. Moreso, the unavailability of top managers that would suit the Chelsea job is another issue. The club needs to be decisive to avoid being stuck in the mud over Sarri’s appointment. Now is the time to act fast and smart.
Let’s go for the best. Cheers!
