Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has omitted Alvaro Morata from his World Cup squad for next month’s fiesta in Russia.

In place of Morata, Lopetegui opted for Valencia striker Rodrigo, and this has caused uproar among Chelsea fans.

Morata played a key role in Spain’s World Cup qualifying campaign as he was Spain’s joint top scorer in World Cup qualifying with five goals, alongside Diego Costa, Isco and David Silva.

However, he has been in miserable form since the turn of the year for Chelsea, scoring just one goal in the Premier League in 2018, which prompted his omission.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Morata wished the team well as he wrote: “Lots of luck in the World Cup. I will be supporting and encouraging to the end as always!”
