It’s often said that defining moments define a club’s present and future. With close to a month gone since the end of last season, Chelsea managerial and playing staff issues still persist. Factor in Roman Abramovich’s visa issues and surely the sky doesn’t look bright and blue at the West London club. No one seems to be sure of the direction the club is going at the moment.

Since the early stages of last season, speculations have been rife about Conte’s position as Chelsea manager. More so, multiple reports claimed the Italian will be axed at the end of the season, but surprisingly he is still manager of the club. Whether because of Chelsea’s reluctance to sanction his £9m payoff or the board’s hesitation in appointing other managers due to financial sticking points, the main worry is that the club is running out of time. With other Premier League rivals having managers in place for next season, the process of hiring a new manager and him having enough time to mould the team the way he would want is another worrying issue. Another scare is that this will delay our transfer plans which meaning by the time this is resolved we might just find ourselves far behind our rivals.

Another potential issue is the growing tension among the playing staff with regards to their futures at the club. With the likes of Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois unwilling to sign contract extensions due to the club’s lack of ambition, this doesn’t bode well. The likes of Cesc Fabregas, Pedro, Willian, and David Luiz have a year or two left on their contracts, which means either tying them up to new deals or buying their replacements will be needed. The need to pacify players unrest with wise and quick decisions on issues surrounding the club will be important to the club’s present and future successes.

Obviously, resolving both the managerial and playing staff issues will go a long way in defining Chelsea’s present and future. The club needs a direction, and quickly too.
