On the back of a disappointing league campaign last season, the fans will be hoping that Chelsea perform better next season. The response of the team after the ‘Mourinho season’ was perfect – we won the league the following season under Antonio Conte. That’s what the fans will be expecting next season.
One major reason for Chelsea’s struggles last season was our defensive disorganisation. The usually solid Chelsea defence became so porous to conceding goals and was vulnerable to attacks. The manner of the goals conceded was absolutely painful to watch. So, it comes as no surprise that reported managerial target, Maurizio Sarri is looking to make defensive reinforcements as a huge priority for his time at the club.
The form, fitness and future of experienced defensive pros like David Luiz and Gary Cahill cannot be hoped on. Luiz struggled with fitness and form last season and being over 30, he clearly doesn’t represent Chelsea’s future. Gary Cahill also struggled with form as his consistency is in doubt. Also above 30, Cahill clearly will be more of an experienced head than the future. More so, the likes of Davide Zappacosta and Kurt Zouma are not good enough for Chelsea. So this leaves us with Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta (not a specialist central defender), Ethan Ampadu (injured and very young), Marcos Alonso and Emerson(fullbacks).
With Christensen the only natural young central defender at the club, then it is wise Chelsea do some defensive reinforcements. Also, Sarri’s attacking style of play will need young defenders with pace and ball-playing skills that can play high line defensive football in order to press the attack from the back.
Let’s start attacking to change our style with good defensive reinforcements. Cheers!
