While leagues across the world are currently on break, the game of football is not. The FIFA World Cup has finally kicked off after a long wait. The global football showpiece began on Thursday with host Russia taking on Saudi Arabia.

The competition will be on until July, and while the beautiful football on display will be an appeal for many, for others, it will be seeing their favorite players lift the trophy. Chelsea have the likes of Eden Hazard, Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thibaut Courtois, Victor Moses, N’Golo Kanté, and more representing their various countries at the world cup, and fans will be keenly hoping that at least, one of these guys lifts the trophy with their country. But even above that, we all will be hoping for a bigger gift from all of our players when the competition ends in July.

Injuries are a part of football, and a nightmare for players and fans alike, and it’s not just because it can cause a player to be sidelined for a while, it can also end careers. So as the world cup lingers, and our players take to the field to represent their various nations, we hope they do not go down with an injury. That would be the best gift they can give us all come July.

We want them to win the trophy too, of course, but if it has to be at the expense of their fitness, then, perhaps, they better return without it. The coming season is off by August 11; an injury to a player at this point may mean many things – including missing our season opener against Huddersfield. We want our players to return in one piece; all of them. That could just be our best World Cup trophy.

King Jay is a writer/broadcaster with years of experience under his belt. His love affair with Chelsea actually began as a joke, but today, he stands tall as a die-hard blue. What makes him perfect for this blog? He lives for Chelsea FC, in fact, I heard he sat in the middle of a road, and refused to go home after that bitter loss to Barcelona in 2009. Haha.
