With just few days left to the end of the current transfer window, many big moves are still expected to go through. In effect, this summer has been a precarious one for the club, with many of our top players linked with exits from the club.
But the major cause of concern currently is the future of goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. With just a year remaining on his current deal, Chelsea is in a position to either sell him now or lose him for free next summer. This has become more difficult for the club with Courtois’ agent urging the club to accept Real Madrid’s bid for the player.
His agent, Henrotay told The Sun:”I have been reading everywhere that Chelsea are saying it is up to Thibaut, but he has made it clear to the club that the best option for him is to move to Madrid.
“For him this is a big decision because he wants to be near his family, and there is an offer in place for Chelsea to accept.”
With this confirmation made about the player’s desire to leave the club, it will be only wise for the club to sell him rather than keep a disgruntled player and later lose him for free.
With this in mind, here are 4 potential replacements for the wantaway Courtois;
The Stoke No.1 goalie and England International is a huge prospect both at club and national levels. He’s seen as one of the best England goalkeepers to have emerged in recent time. With Stoke City back to the Championship after suffering relegation last season, Chelsea might just be an opportunity for Butland to prove he’s up there as one of the best goalies in the world and also make a name for himself. With him still young at 25, the club can be rest assured they’re buying a player for the long term with a decade to still develop and become the best in his position.
The Italy International and AC Milan shot-stopper is another huge prospect in world football. At 19, the teenager has already made over 70 appearances for the Italian side as their number one goalie. His ability as a top class goalkeeper is unquestionable as he proven himself to be good enough in recent years.
Donnaruma can be a good replacement for the wantaway Courtois. With him just being 19, he will be a shrewd transfer, but the only stumbling block will be paying his hardball agent, Mino Raiola his agent fee, and also convincing Milan’s owners to sell which will mean paying his release clause. Reports have it that the 19-year-old goalkeeper has two buy-out clauses inserted into the new deal he signed last year. The deal depends on Milan qualifying for the Champions League. Should they fail to reach Europe’s elite club competition, the clause is believed to stand at 50m euros (£44m,) but if they do, it doubles to 100m euros (£88m). If this is true, Chelsea can test Milan’s resolve to keep their prized asset with a firm bid that could make them consider selling.
The Atletico goalkeeper was understudy to Thibaut Courtois during the Belgian’s time at the capital club. But the Belgian’s return to Chelsea in 2013 saw Oblak installed as first choice between the sticks by Diego Simeone. Ever since then, Oblak has developed and blossomed into one of the finest goalkeepers in world football. In retrospect, everyone connected to Chelsea can remember his heroic performance against the club in last season’s Match day 6 Champions league group game. That was just a glimpse of what we would be getting if the club signs him. Will Atletico be willing to sell him? Will Chelsea be willing to pay his reported release clause in the region of 100 million euros? But if the club does, then we will surely be getting a world class goalie in Jan Oblak.
Pickford will be the third Everton player to be linked with a Chelsea move in recent times after the club failed to sign either of John Stones or Romelu Lukaku. With Chelsea and Everton usually parallel lines when it come to transfer negotiations, it might not be a deal to be relied on. However, our slim hopes of convincing Everton into selling the England No.1 and their first choice goalkeeper will boil down to Chelsea nearing or meeting their valuation of the player. In part, Pickford is a decent goalie and will be good enough for Chelsea.
Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
