Ross Barkley has played an effective role for Chelsea in Maurizio Sarri’s new system.
Sarri is trying to set Chelsea up to play his attractive brand of football that has been termed as Sarri-ball. And in our first couple of pre-season fixtures, Barkley has started on the left-hand side of a midfield trio, with Jorginho at the base and Cesc Fabregas on the right.
Barkley spoke about his own role in Sarri’s system and how the formation allows him to try to have a positive impact higher up the pitch.
“There will be freedom, because we have three men in midfield, to go forward, get close to the box, have shots and try to create,” explained Barkley.
“But we’ve got to be disciplined and organised without ball possession, being well drilled. It’s a new style of play and we’re all learning day by day.”
