Chelsea defeated Newcastle 2-1 at the St James Park, and the Blues took the lead in the second half courtesy of an Eden Hazard penalty in the 76th minute.

The referee pointed to the spot when Fabian Schar went for a lunge on Marcos Alonso midway through the second half.

Alonso claimed after the game that it was a deserved penalty, but Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez disagreed with Alonso’s assessment of the penalty and believes that it was ‘soft’.

“Penalty – soft. Foul was soft. Then they maybe could have scored in the end.

“They have players that can beat people in one vs one situations. We were compact.

“The penalty changed everything. We had to be more open.”
