Maurizio Sarri’ Sarri-ball is beginning to pay off as Chelsea fans were treated to a show of possession football at the St James Park.
It was a difficult 2-1 victory for the Blues but it was one which almost the entire game was played in Newcastle’s half.
Chelsea had 82% possession of the ball, and the Blues ended up setting a pass record. Chelsea attempted 913 passes against Rafael Benitez’s team, with 838 reaching their target.
This is the club’s highest pass record in a game since Opta began recording in 2003-04, but it is not a new best for the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 1015 passes against Swansea in April this year is top of the chart, which overtook the record of 976 they had set and then levelled in March against Chelsea and Everton.
The fourth best on record is again City – 929 against West Brom in October 2017, which beat the 2011 tally set against Stoke in 2011 under Roberto Mancini, while Chelsea are 5th on the chart.
