This summer was one of Chelsea’s most challenging in recent years. The club faced the prospect of losing three of its key players, and ended up losing just one – Thibaut Courtois. Willian Borges was wanted by Barcelona with the club rejecting bids from the Catalan side for the Brazilian.  Thibaut Courtois’ forced move to Real Madrid was largely out of the club’s hands as the player was in the final year of his contract and desperately wanted out. Eden Hazard’s desire to play for Real Madrid was not made possible because the club wasn’t willing to sell their most prized asset, and also the Spanish side wasn’t ready to pay top dollars for him.

But in all three, Hazard’s exit would have been the most devastating for Chelsea. He is the most talented and supremely gifted player at the club. His influence at Chelsea is just why he can’t be sold. His solid performances at the World Cup and blistering start to the new season will also see him have numerous suitors come every transfer window. With the player bound to enter the final year of his contract by next summer, Chelsea must do everything within their powers to keep him at the club for the long-term.

Here are FOUR ways Chelsea can keep him at the club:

If the club really wants to keep Hazard, then they need to give him a mega pay-rise. The player’s outstanding in the royal blue colors of Chelsea has seen us win laurels over the years. More so, his loyalty to the club is unquestionable and needs to be rewarded. He has never been a disruptive player, and chose not to force a move to Madrid like Courtois, but was willing to still play for the Chelsea. His performances so far this season show that the player loves the club, and the club must show they value him by paying him his value worth.

One of the reasons the player has so far failed to sign a contract extension is because of the club’s lack of ambition both on and off field. The club’s ambition in the transfer market was worth questioning by the player in all ramifications. To say that this summer transfer was Chelsea’s best in a while is not hyperbolic. Previous transfer windows have seen us fall short of expectations and fall behind the super-rich clubs and rivals. If Chelsea can’t buy quality players, how then would he be convinced about the club’s plan to be a dominant force, and why should the player sign? The club must look to improve the playing squad so that we can stand a chance of winning laurels and maintaining our status as being the best domestically, in the continent, and one of the best in the world.  The Champions League rather than the Europa League is Chelsea’s place, and winning it is not beyond the club. This level of ambition is what Hazard wants to see at the club.

If the club really wants to keep Hazard, then they must get the support from the fans. As a fans’ favourite, they can appeal to his emotions by urging him to stay at the club. In the summer of 2005 after winning the Champions League with Liverpool, Steven Gerrard was on the verge of completing a move to Chelsea, but the appeal of the Anfield fans touched his heart so much that he changed his mind about leaving the Reds. The same can be done to keep Hazard at the club.

Hazard’s importance to Chelsea is superlative. The player has been and is still the club’s talisman; a player capable of winning games on his own. His performances and contributions are awing and are really important to Chelsea’s chances of winning silverware. Making him the club’s captain will make him know how valued he is at the club, and might just convince him to commit his long-term future to Chelsea sooner rather than later..

Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
