Having had a perfect start to the season, it was expected that Chelsea will get the win against West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday. But it was a different game for the Blues, as Maurizio Sarri’s Sarri-ball wasn’t enough to beat the Hammers.
West Ham had a game plan that was executed really well. They sat deep and pressed Chelsea really hard and tight in front of their box, leaving spaces thin and few behind. Anything that passed the Hammers defence was well handled by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, much to the frustration of the Chelsea faithful.
David Luiz revealed his disappointment after the game, and he admitted that the team wasn’t on its high level that we have seen all season long. Luiz also admitted that Chelsea’s movement both when with the ball and off the ball was too was slow which made it easy for West Ham to defend Chelsea’s advances.
“Of course we are disappointed,” said David Luiz about the draw. “We didn’t play a fantastic game, we didn’t create a lot. It was too slow, moving the ball to create the gaps or our movements without the ball, and that is why we couldn’t score.
“I think our plan is fantastic. On Sunday we didn’t play at our high level so that is why we didn’t win.
“We know that many teams now are going to play against us this way, with a low block and trying to play on the counter-attack, so there was not a lot of space but it is up to us to try to find a solution.”
