Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri was surprisingly left out of Chelsea’s 1-0 Europa League win over PAOK on Thursday.
The 24-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Roma in January for £17 million, is yet to play a competitive match for Chelsea this season and many expected him to play against PAOK.
Emerson wasn’t part of the 21-man squad that travelled to Greece for the game against PAOK and no reason was given for his omission.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri opted to start Marcos Alonso, who has started every game for Chelsea this season, against PAOK and replaced the Spaniard with Cesar Azpilicueta midway through the second half.
Emerson praised his teammates for securing a 1-0 win against PAOK on Thursday. He also hinted he was fine and not injured.
Emerson wasn’t the only player who failed to get game time in the Europa League game against PAOK.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek made the bench against PAOK and would be disappointed not to get some minutes in the game.
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ethan Ampadu travelled with the squad to Greece but were not included in the final 18-man squad.
Sarri hinted before the game that some players were going to be disappointed with some decisions he would make for the game against PAOK.
