Chelsea legend and Derby County boss Frank Lampard believes Chelsea youngster Mason Mount, who is currently on loan at Derby County, is ready for a senior England call-up next month.

Mount has impressed while on loan at Derby and the youngster was impressive again in Derby’s goalless draw against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.

England boss Gareth Southgate was at Pride Park on Tuesday night to watch Mount and Lampard wants the 19-year-old to be given a senior call-up despite playing in the Championship.

“Mason Mount can do anything he wants, he is that good,” said Lampard. “That’s not to stay he will go in and be an England starter in their next game, as it’s Gareth Southgate’s choice.

“But whatever level you put him in, because of his quality, work ethic and mentality – he wants to get better and better – he will do anything he wants to.

“It’s my decision to play him every week and it will be Gareth’s decision, if and when, to pick him for the England team.’

Lampard added: “Championship players should be in the England team if they deserve it. This is a competitive league and most players, as we know at the World Cup for England, come through the Championship in one way, shape or form.

“I’m sure Gareth and Steve Holland are not discounting anybody for any reasons. You go and watch someone on merit and if they play well enough they’re in the squad. Those have always been the rules.

“It never did Trevor Brooking any harm. I grew up watching West Ham win the FA Cup final when they were the old Second Division.

“ For Mason Mount, he is a great example of the loan system. People want to bemoan the loan system but sometimes I don’t think they know why.

“Chelsea have a got a great young talent and part of his development is to come here. It helps us, it helps him, it helps Chelsea, and it is a perfect example of how it works well.

“Mason was fantastic [against Blackburn]. It is how he has been playing for us every game. His free-kick was top class, his general play was creative, and his work-rate and passing were excellent. There is more to come from him. I think Gareth would have been impressed.”

Mason has scored four goals from midfield for Derby County this season and went so close to making it five, hitting the crossbar with a 30-yard free-kick against Blackburn.
