Frank Lampard has revealed that he tried to sign Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu on loan during the summer transfer window.
The Blues legend who signed a three-year deal with Derby County in May for his first managerial job signed two Chelsea youngsters Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount on loan for the Rams, and Mount has made an exceptional start to the season with four goals and an assist in eight games.
Lampard has now admitted that he tried to sign Ampadu on loan as well, but Maurizio Sarri wasn’t interested and turned down the move.
“I looked at him (Ampadu). I spoke to the (Chelsea) manager and he told me he wants him in their squad, so it was a very short conversation,” Lampard admitted.
“I was very impressed with Sarri. I think he is a great manager, great character. He was very nice to me about it.
“Quite rightly, he probably wants Ampadu as part of his squad. He is a fantastic talent. It was a question (we asked), and we have fully moved on.”
Although the buzzing teenager is yet to feature for Chelsea’s first-team so far this season, he caught the eye with a man-of-the-match display during Wales’ 4-1 win over the Republic of Ireland last week.
