Maurizio Sarri signed Mateo Kovacic on a season-long loan deal as part of Thibaut Courtois’ controversial switch to Real Madrid.
Kovacic has slotted straight into midfield alongside N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, with Ross Barkley battling him for the advanced midfield role.
Kovacic was forced off early in the second half and was taken off for Barkley just five minutes into the second period.
Sarri revealed during his press conference that the injury which brought Kovacic’s afternoon to a premature conclusion was ‘nothing serious’ and praised the quality of his team as the Croatian’s absence wasn’t felt.
He said: “I’m very happy because I thought the beginning for me would be very difficult. I’m lucky because I have a good team, good players, not only one.
“I’m very happy with my team, I’m happy to be here in the Premier League.”
