During the summer of 2016, Chelsea’s business in the transfer window was not heart-warming for the fans. The signings of David Luiz and Michy Batshuayi raised eyebrows, but the most questionable was the signing of left wing-back, Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina.

The Spaniard wasn’t the kind of signing the fans expected.  The fact he failed to make the grade at Real Madrid’s Castilla, and also failing to excel at both Sunderland and Bolton during his first two stints in English football made him a gamble signing in the eyes of the Chelsea Faithful. More so, the bad impression created by the player during his time at Bolton Wanderers for being a suspect of having committed an alleged crime against road safety, driving while over the alcohol limit, a crime of negligent homicide and causing of reckless injury, made him look like a player with too many wrongs than rights – his flaws were ominous.

Then factor in the forgettable spell of Juan Cuadrado at the club, the sky wasn’t blue for Alonso at Chelsea. In his first season at the club, despite his contribution in our attacking play, he was often seen as Chelsea’s weak link defensively as then manager, Antonio Conte reverted to a 3-4-3 formation. The defender was often criticised for his defensive shortcomings and largely made a scapegoat for poor performances.

Fast forward to his third season now as a Chelsea player, Alonso has been reborn and transformed ever since then. A series of commanding displays and an influential role in Chelsea’s play has seen his star continue to shine and his rating increase. He’s currently the best left-back in the Premier league as he made it into the team of the season during the last campaign. His goals, assists  and overall play has yielded results for the club, and also his $30m signing fee now looks like a real bargain.

The player has already started this season with a bang with a goal and two assists to his name already. He has also been nominated as one of the players in contention to win the August Player of the Month award. With Alonso in the Chelsea team, everything turns into gold as he has proven that he can be a talismanic player for the club with mind-blowing performances.

Alonso is now proving that he’s one of the best left-backs, not only in the Premier League, but in the world. His goal and assists have made him an invaluable addition to the side.

Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
