Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley had an impressive game in Chelsea’s 1-0 Europa League win over PAOK on Thursday but he almost gave away a penalty as he appeared to pull down PAOK midfielder Mauricio in the box.
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has slammed Barkley for almost giving away a penalty in a game Chelsea were so dominant and believes that could leave Maurizio Sarri frustrated with him.
“He’s just on the wrong side,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.
“And because he’s wrong side, he has to grab.
“You see the reaction from Mauricio after, he goes straight to the referee.
“The point is, Ross played great, he played really well in that first half.
“But if you’re going to give away a penalty in a game you’re so dominant, that’s going to frustrate the manager.
“Those little details add up and can stick out negatively. Ross has played great but that could have cost Chelsea there.”
Former Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle added: “There’s a penalty in there for PAOK.
“Without any shadow of a doubt (there should have been a penalty).
“Ross Barkley’s done well, but look at him holding, wrong side. He’s grabbing his shirt.”
Do you think Barkley was lucky to give away a penalty?
