Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso has signed a new contract at Chelsea that keeps him at Stamford Bridge until June 2023, claims ESPN FC.
While on international duty with Spain, the 27-year-old left-back revealed talks over a new contract with Chelsea had reached an advanced stage and that he expected to put pen to paper by the end of the month.
According to ESPN FC, Alonso has now signed the contract and an official announcement could be made by Chelsea as early as Wednesday.
Alonso has established himself as a key player for the Blues after joining from Fiorentina in 2016 for £24 million.
He impressed as a left wing-back under Antonio Conte and he has also impressed as a left-back since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.
Sarri has been impressed with Alonso and hailed the 27-year-old as the best in Europe in September.
“Alonso, at the moment, in this position at left-back is maybe the best in Europe,” Sarri said in September.
“[His] physical qualities are at a top level, I think. He’s doing very well in the offensive phase. But I also think he can improve in the defensive phase. If he improves that, he could be the best left-back in the world.”
