England boss Gareth Southgate has released his squad for the upcoming international break, and the Three Lions boss put some shocking names in his 25-man squad.
Southgate named a very youthful squad and handed first ever call-ups to Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and James Maddison.
The England manager recalled Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley and Harry Winks as well as former Blue Nathaniel Chalobah for the forthcoming Nations League qualifiers away to Croatia and Spain.
It was a shock call-up for Mason Mount who’s currently having an incredible season on loan with Derby County in the Championship.
Speaking on why he called up Mount, Southgate said: “Mason has created more chances than anyone in the Championship. He’s trained with us before.”
Frank Lampard was also excited that the 19-year-old was called up to the senior team.
Lampard said: “He is a hungry lad, he wants to go to the top but to get a full England call-up at 19 is something a bit special – but I think he is a special player, a special lad.
“He has the ingredients on the pitch, which he is showing, and I think there is more to come.
“He also has the crucial ingredients off the pitch in terms of his mindset, his humility and his hard work ethic.
“Only with that can you get in a full international squad of England’s quality at 19. We are delighted for him.”
For Ross Barkley, he has been having a good season with Chelsea after an injury hit campaign last term, and the 24-year-old revealed some time ago that he hopes to impress the gaffer and get a recall to the national team.
He said: “I’ve just got to do what I can.
“I’m still learning and giving 100 per cent in training, trying to learn the new manager’s methods. Hopefully with my performances on the pitch I’ll be in the thoughts of the England manager.”
Barkley now has his dreams come true after getting a recall, but unfortunately Ruben Loftus-Cheek wasn’t given a call-up this time around.
