Ruben Loftus-Cheek caught the eye with his superb display as Chelsea defeated BATE Borisov 3-1 in the Europa League game on Thursday night.
The Chelsea midfielder bagged a hat-trick in the game and was a joy to watch.
The 22-year-old was seen receiving tactical instructions from the manager Maurizio Sarri especially in the first half, and he has revealed what the Chelsea boss was actually saying to him.
“He was just telling me what I need to be doing defensively and with my positioning, which is good for me because I need to keep learning,” said Loftus-Cheek.
“When he’s talking to me on the pitch I can understand it more because I can see it, I’m in it, so in that way my development is easier, so I have to say thank you to him for helping me.
“The manager demands a lot defensively so it’s up to me to work as hard as I can to get it and do what he wants. I think the more I play the more it will come, and the more I get it, the more opportunities I will get.”
Sarri admitted after the game that he was pleased with Loftus-Cheek’s performance, but added that the England international needs to improve on the defensive aspect of his game.
“He played very, very well,” Sarri said of Loftus-Cheek. “In the offensive phase wonderful.
“I told him at the beginning of the season I thought he was really a very good player. Now I think the same, but now he’s now more suitable to my football.
“He’s improving. He needs to improve in the defensive phase, but it’s not only Loftus.
“At the moment we have four midfielders for two positions, three of them with the same characteristics. Only Kante is a defensive midfielder.
“It’s very difficult for me to put in the starting XI two so offensive midfielders at the same time. I hope to be able to do it in the future. I need the cooperation of the players of course. I need an improvement in the defensive phase.”
