Following Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Tottenham on Saturday, several pundits criticised Maurizio Sarri’s insistence on playing N’Golo Kante in a more advanced midfield position.
Pundits like Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer insisted Sarri should play Kante as the deepest central midfielder ahead of Jorginho.
Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud believes Kante can play any position in midfield.
“I think N’Golo can play every single position in midfield,” Giroud said.
“Jorginho or Cesc are the holding midfielders and they are playing a very important part in our game, so maybe in the manager’s mind N’Golo is more efficient playing box to box.
“He can be more efficient carrying the ball and finding passes between the lines. We know how fast he is, so when he recovers the ball he can perforate the lines, that’s one of his main strengths.
“It’s a good position for him. Maybe he needs to be more selfish around the box, when he has the opportunity to shoot. I am pretty sure he will score more goals.
“We don’t need to question his position; we need to adapt to what the manager wants.”
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri also insisted this week that he doesn’t want Kante to play as his deepest central midfielder.
“I want to play a central midfielder who is a very technical player, so for me, the central midfielder is Jorginho or (Cesc) Fabregas,” Sarri said.
“I don’t want Kante in this position.
“Kante, in the last match, wanted to solve the match after the first 15 minutes, but in the wrong way. He lost the position, he attacked too much.
“This one is not one of the best characteristics of Kante, but it was only in reaction to the difficulties.
“Maybe it’s only a question of time, but Kante has to stay near to Jorginho, especially when the ball is on the other side.”
