Mateo Kovacic, on loan from Real Madrid, has impressed for Chelsea so far this season.
Liverpool, alongside Manchester City and Chelsea are fighting for the Premier League title this season, with all three teams unbeaten so far.
Kovacic has jokingly said Liverpool won’t win the Premier League because they have Dejan Lovren, his Croatian teammate, in their team.
Kovacic made the comment at an event organized by the Vatreno Heart Foundation to raise money for charity, with a film shown to remember the nation’s run to this summer’s World Cup final. He was joined by international teammates Luka Modric, Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic.
However, after the film ended the jokes started and Kovacic got involved.
“Liverpool will not be England champion,” Kovacic jokingly according to 24Sata. “Why? Because they have Dejan Lovren.”
Kovacic was only joking and taking a dig at his international teammates Lovren, who described himself as one of the best defenders in the world.
After helping Croatia beat England to reach the final, Lovren told beIN Sports: “It’s something special for me.
“From my point of view, people were saying I had a difficult season but I don’t agree with that.
“I showed that I took Liverpool to the Champions League final and now with my national team we are in the final.
“I think people should recognise that I’m one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense I will say.”
