Chelsea defender David Luiz has been urged to play at a higher tempo if the Blues must beat Tottenham at the Wembley Stadium later today.
Paul Merson blames the defender for Chelsea’s goalless draw with Everton before the international break.
Merson believes Chelsea were too slow against Everton and it was mostly down to David Luiz.
Merson told the Daily Star: “He needs to put a shift in for Chelsea against Tottenham because he is sometimes their biggest problem.
“I was at Stamford Bridge for the Everton game and 10 minutes in I said it would finish 0-0. It was too slow – and mostly because of Luiz.
“He takes a touch, plays it back to the keeper, plays it square, plays it square again. Then he had the audacity to tell the fans to liven up.
“That’s what he should have been doing for me. It set the tone and if they do that again today they won’t beat Spurs.
“When Chelsea move the ball quickly they are electric and few teams can live with them. When they slow it down they are rubbish.
“But I actually think if they can get a draw in this game it would be a good result. I don’t think there’s much between the teams.
“Chelsea’s match-winners are probably in slightly better form – Eden Hazard has been on fire this season and they are even getting a tune out of Ross Barkley.
“But it’s always a tough game. Either way I’d expect both teams to finish in the top four.”
