AC Milan and Premier League rivals Manchester United are in a battle to sign Chelsea defender Gary Cahill when the transfer window opens in January, claims Daily Star.
The Chelsea captain has fallen out of favour under Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea are reportedly prepared to allow him to leave on loan in January to secure more regular first-team football.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is desperate for defensive additions at Old Trafford and is pushing hard to sign Cahill in January but he will face stiff competition from Italian club AC Milan.
AC Milan are in the midst of a defensive injury crisis and Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport claim AC Milan could make a January bid for Cahill to bolster their options at the back.
Cahill, capped 61 times by England, has been a loyal servant at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Bolton in 2012 for £7 million.
Cahill has won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, a Champions League and a Europa League with Chelsea.
Cahill revealed in September that he could leave Chelsea in January in search of regular football.
“I don’t want to jump the gun but, as things stand, probably yes,” Cahill said in January.
“Sometimes you have to make tough decisions. As it is, I’m not enjoying things.”
