Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has finally named Chelsea’s permanent captain.
Sarri has delayed in making the decision after replacing Antonio Conte as Chelsea boss over the summer.
The captain band has moved around this season with Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Willian wearing the armband this season.
Sarri has now confirmed Gary Cahill will remain as Chelsea’s permanent club captain and that Cesar Azpilicueta will take on the duties when the Englishman is not on the pitch.
Sarri revealed he took the decision to continue with Cahill as Chelsea captain after speaking the players.
“As we have seen in the last matches, the captain is Cahill, like in the last match,” Sarri said.
“When he isn’t on the pitch our captain is Azpilicueta. Our [permanent] captain is Cahill.
“Cahill was the captain last season. I spoke with his teammates and they all told me he really was a very good captain. For me Cahill is very important on the pitch and out of the pitch.”
Cahill took over the role of Chelsea captain after Chelsea legend John Terry left the club at the end of the 2016/17 season.
Azpilicueta has worn the captain armband in most games this season with Cahill playing just one Premier League game with Sarri preferring Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz in central defence.
