An Olivier Giroud header early in the second half was enough to help Chelsea secure a 1-0 win over BATE Borisov in Belarus on Thursday night.

The victory secured Chelsea’s qualification to the knockout stage of the Europa League while also maintaining our status as the only unbeaten team in Europe’s top five leagues.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri wasn’t impressed with the performance of the team against BATE Borisov.

According to Sarri, the ball was moved horizontally and slow, making it difficult for Chelsea to be dangerous.

Sarri insists the only positive from the game was the result.

“The result. I think. Because we didn’t play very well,” Sarri said.

“I didn’t like the first half because we moved the ball only horizontal and slowly, so it was really very difficult to be dangerous.

“Better in the first 20-25 minutes of the second half. Then we managed not the end very well, the last 15 minutes. The best situation this evening is the result.

“It wasn’t very easy to play a good game here. There was only conditions to play very badly – for the cold, the opponents, the pitch, for everything. But, I think, that we could have done better.”

Sarri was impressed with the performance of our opponents BATE Borisov and believes they were unlucky not to get a point from the game.

“What can I say? They played very well, I think,” Sarri added.

“They defended very well in the first half. Also in the first part of the second half, and attacked very well in the last 15 minutes. I think, at the end of the match, they were unlucky. They could draw the match. They played very well, better for sure than at Stamford Bridge.”
